Our Congregation

The Reedsport Church of God continues to function as a community church for the town of Reedsport and its surrounding areas. Our members come from a variety of denominational backgrounds, and we appreciate the diversity of perspectives that this variety fosters. Visitors always comment on the warm and friendly atmosphere of our fellowship.

We have an average attendance of between 125 and 135 on any given Sunday, with an average Sunday school attendance of approximately 50. Sunday school begins at 9:30 and ends at 10:30. There is an adult Sunday school class, high school class, middle school class, and classes for 4th - 6th graders, for 1st - 3rd graders, and for children 3 years old - kindergarten.
Two Sunday morning worship services are offered. The first begins at 9:30, the second at 11:00. Between the services (10:30-11:00) coffee and cookies are served in the Fellowship Hall. This offers an opportunity for visiting with friends and newcomers. We have a blended style of worship that includes both hymns and more contemporary praise songs. Our worship is led by a worship team of three vocalists, a pianist, one or two guitarist, a keyboard player and a drum player. We also have a hand bell choir that performs on special occasions. While there are some distinct musical style preferences among the congregation, it’s a tribute to the openness of the members that we have been relatively free of the controversy between traditional and contemporary forms of worship that has affected many other churches.

Our membership has fluctuated a great deal during the church’s existence, partly because of the fluidity of the community in general. The demographics of our congregation reflect the general profile of our community. The Oregon coast is attracting growing numbers of senior citizens, and we have a large group in our church now as well. During the past few years, a group of new families with young children has also injected new energy into the congregation.

Our central location in town and our proximity to the high school have also contributed to our role as the community church. Groups that have used our facilities in recent years for their regular meetings include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Weight watchers, and Overeaters Anonymous. Partly as a result of this these contacts, at different times in the past the church has been a haven for many struggling with addictions and broken lives.
