Local Ministries

Our regularly scheduled services and outreaches illustrate our local ministry focus. A Bible study meets at the church each Sunday evening, three home Bible study groups meet on Wednesday evening and another meets on Thursday evening, and a men’s Bible study meets at 5:30 on Friday mornings.

We have an active group of seniors known as the Circle of Friends that meets monthly for meals and programs. Recent activities have included a tour of one of the members home and farm including a chance to pet an alpaca or climb into a tree house, a barbecue at Pastor Allen's home, trips into North Bend to see plays, dinner out followed by a tour of the Christmas lights at Shore Acres, and lunch at church with invitations to local churches followed by a hymn sing.

Our children’s program is based on the enthusiastic dedication of our excellent volunteer Sunday school teachers. Each Sunday school session begins with all children aged three to eleven gathered together for fifteen minutes to half an hour of high-energy singing and intercessory prayer. Many of the songs the children learn during this time become special music for the adults during the Sunday morning service. The children then go to their various Sunday school classes. During the sermon time of the eleven o'clock worship service, children aged three through 3rd grade go downstairs for junior church, which is also led by volunteers. Recent children’s activities have included a bowling party attended by more than thirty kids and a swimming party and sleep over at the church for children who had logged in five of a possible seven Sundays in Sunday school.
Our pastors have traditionally been very active in the Lower Umpqua Ministerial Association (LUMA), a group of pastors from various churches in Reedsport who meet regularly for prayer and planning of community outreach events and worship services. LUMA’s activities include sponsorship of the local food pantry and administration of the Community Benevolence and Transient Aid Fund; sponsorship of the community Thanksgiving meal for shut-ins, elderly, and people who are alone; a booth at Ocean Festival to distribute Bibles, Jesus films, and other Christian literature; interdenominational Good Friday and Easter sunrise services; vesper services for the nursing home; and general help for the community where it is needed.

Our annual Vacation Bible School is also a tremendous outreach to the community. More than twenty volunteers and seventy-five children spend a fun-packed week learning songs and games, eating snacks, watching skits, and learning about God. In the past several years, volunteers from four other area churches have also contributed to our VBS. On Friday evening the children invite their parents and families to an end-of-the-week extravaganza where they sing the songs they’ve learned and show off the elaborately decorated classrooms. Many of these children and families have no other relationship with a church.

A fun activity for children of all ages is the annual Reedsport 500. Each participant brings their favorite and fastest "matchbox" type car to race down the track to the finish line. After several elimination rounds, the final 8 winners are crowned. It's a fun time of racing and cheering on your favorite "driver".
Early on a Saturday morning of each month, the men of the church host a breakfast for the men of the community. This is an informal gathering and a great time of fellowship for men from several churches in town. The pastor has generally provided a brief devotional after the meal. The men have also organized themselves into two Bible studies that meet weekly in homes for in-depth study, fellowship, and accountability.
The women of the church have not had a formal organization for several years now, but they do sponsor a year-long secret sister exchange, an annual Christmas party with program, a prayer chain for prayer concerns of the church, and special events, such as a recent hat shower for a member going through chemotherapy.
